December 08, 2009, 6:23PMHarrisburg Fire Chief Daniel Soulier will be stepping down next week after a few months in the post.
Soulier plans to leave on Dec. 18, said city spokesman Matthew Coulter. His departure will make at least 20 city employees who have resigned prior to the end of Mayor Stephen R. Reed’s term in January. That number includes Harrisburg Police Chief Charles Kellar who resigned this month after 23 years of service.
Many of the departed city employees have received severance packages for accrued sick time, vacation pay and personal days. Information on any payout available to Soulier will not be available until after his resignation, Coulter said.
Soulier joined the Harrisburg Fire Bureau in January of 1979. He was named acting chief when Donald Konkle left the post in January 2008, and officially became chief in the summer of 2009.It is unknown why Soulier decided to leave the post. He did not respond to a request for comment by deadline Tuesday.
Reed has not yet named a replacement or indicated if he will leave the fire chief position vacant, Coulter said.
Charlie Gerow, a spokesman for mayor-elect Linda Thompson, said a transition team has a working group discussing public safety issues, including fire, police and emergency management. Thompson will make announcements about all of these departments in the very near future, he said.
